I am running for Sheriff because we need leadership in the Sheriff 's Office that is willing to stand up for what is right and work hard for all departmental staff, detainees and all of our fellow citizens. My goals are simple:
· To IMPACT people lives
· To EMPOWER people lives
· To INSPIRE people lives
· To ENCOURAGE people lives
Prisons and jails incarcerate a disproportionate amount of people who have a current or past mental health problem, and facilities are not meeting the demand for treatment. Police are also often used to respond to mental health crises, despite their involvement frequently resulting in violence or incarceration. As individuals enter into the criminal justice system, their access to treatment changes. Many will lose insurance benefits and services. For those who begin receiving services while incarcerated, many lose access, sometimes immediately, when they return to the community. This can be particularly dangerous for people who suddenly lose access to prescribed medications. To ensure the best possible outcomes for individuals, which includes keeping them out of jails and prisons, it is essential that we create systems that support people as they transition both in and out of incarceration. People should receive appropriate supports while incarcerated and have a plan that connects them to community-based services and with adequate financial resources prior to returning to the community.
Provide Qualified mental health professionals to serve in administrative leadership roles
Provide intensive mental health training for staff
Provide appropriate treatment for inmates with mental illness
Implement and promote jail diversion programs

Encourage case studies
Invest in services
Establish careful intake screening
Mandate release planning
